Of all the medical emergencies I think that epilepsy is the one event that is surrounded by myth and lies as well as the incorrect treatment. Perhaps a word on what actually causes an epileptic fit! In very simple terms it is a form of electrical short circuiting of the electrical nerves in the brain. One of the incorrect perceptions by many people is that an epileptic fit is caused by demons. It is NOT the case! So don’t be afraid!
The other misnomer is that people still believe one must prevent the patient from swallowing their tongue by inserting a spoon or something hard in their mouth to bite on. It is a physical impossibility to swallow your own tongue.
The best thing one can do when witnessing someone having an epileptic fit is to make sure that the person is not hurt. Therefore, they must not have any objects nearby that may cause injury to the victim. Clear the floor by moving furniture or objects in order to create a clear space. Then turn the person onto their side (in recovery position) so that they do not choke on any sputum, food, chewing gum or from having any other objects in their mouth, such as false teeth. DO NOT put your fingers in the person’s mouth. They can literally bite your finger off!
Once you have turned them onto their side, encourage and comfort them. Generally, they fall asleep after an epileptic fit. Look for a medic alert bracelet, it may indicate if the person is a known epileptic sufferer. If possible, try to get a history. Find out if the person is on anti-epileptic medication, when last was it taken and if they are taking any other medicines. Do they have any other diseases such as diabetes or high blood pressure? Any information you gather may be helpful.
Always make sure the person is taken to a medical facility for a full evaluation by a medical doctor.
