(Citizen 24 June 2008) Operations at factory not interrupted after fire
JOHANNESBURG
Operations at the mattress factory gutted by fire in Industria, Johannesburg on Tuesday morning would not be interrupted, management said. “...supply would not be interrupted although the foam production areas had been severely damaged. Other foam production facilities nearby and elsewhere in the country will be able to supply the Industria facility’s conversion plant…”
The factory was engulfed by flames over two metres high around 8.30am. The blaze was extinguished five hours later. About 40 fire fighters and 10 fire engines battled the fire. “Several chemical containers outside the factory also exploded,” said Johannesburg emergency services spokesman “...workers were taken to hospital for severe smoke inhalation, bringing the number of casualties to nine. ...eight of these were taken to hospitals in the area by ambulance. They were treated for mild to moderate smoke inhalation…
Environmental health experts are on the scene checking air quality and structural engineers are checking to see if surrounding buildings are safe. About 200 employees had to be evacuated. Hundreds of workers from surrounding factories were also evacuated.” The cause of the fire was not known and an investigation would be conducted, said Morokane.
